Numeronyms: acronyms to the next level

Numeronyms: acronyms to the next level

Everyone loves using acronyms ("sarcasm"): you can save precious time, precious tabs/clicks and above all they make you seem and look expert in whatever you're talking about. Do you work in a big company? Woah, great: another gazillion of acronyms! Make sure you throw a couple of them in your conversations and you'll seem an expert, trust me.

Wanna give the impression of being more expert than an expert? Try numeronyms instead then! 'cause it's not right to include only letters! BTW (!) let's explore what are and what they mean.

You can find two kinds of numeronyms: everybody is used to interpret "24/7" as "24 hours a day and 7 days a week". Or "101" for "introductory course". That's our first type.

What interests more us is the second one. They're quite easy to grasp (once you've figured out the trick): take the first and last letter, count those in between and boom, you got it.

In my articles you'll find mainly the numeronym for "accessibility". Let's have a look at it:

  • accessibility

  • A - ccessibilit - Y

  • A - 11 - Y

  • a11y

I like this one 'cause resembles the word ALLY, that basically is what you are to those that have issues in their web navigation experience. But I cannot resist laughing at it because of its inaccessibility, both in its incomprehensibility, if you're not been introduced to it before, and readability, since in some fonts the number "1" is virtually indistinguishable from the lowercase "L" (kudos for Eric Meyer that pointed this out first).

Without further ado, here's a list of the most common numeronyms I can think of:

NumeronymHuman-readable
a11yAccessibilitY
i18nInternationalizatioN
l10nLocalizatioN
m17nMultilingualizatioN
p13nPersonalizatioN
v12nVirtualizatioN

Do you think I'm missing one or more useful numeronyms? Let me know and I'll add them w5t a1y h8n (without any hesitation)!
